Staurolite® is a
name for a variety of loose mineral abrasive grains that the duPont
Co. domestically manufactures. These Staurolite Products are used for
various applications, the most popular of course being surface preparation
for a coating on steel. There are approximately 5-6 products that are
available in the duPont Staurolite Products group. The most widely
used abrasive grain is Starblast® which provides a 1.8-2.2 mil profile
on either new or lightly coated or rusty steel. Starblast is very popular
with painting contractors because of the product’s low dust and fast
cutting qualities. Starblast is also 95% free of silica. The coarsest
product in the Staurolite Products group is appropriately called Coarse
Staurolite®. Coarse Staurolite is the most aggressive product in the
Staurolite Products group. Starblast® Ultra, a fairly new product from
duPont, is a mixture of Starblast and Coarse Staurolite. Starblast
Ultra is an aggressive, extremely efficient and more readily available
abrasive grain. Yet another product from duPont, Starblast®XL,
contains less than 1% free silica and it is approved for dry-blasting
at U.S. Naval shipyards. Finally,
Biasill®, the finest abrasive grain in the Staurolite Products group,
is excellent where low mil profiles are needed and has also been used
in wet-blasting applications on surfaces such as brick and aluminum. Available Grades

Steel grit and shot is used in many applications most of which are either blast cleaning or shot peening. As a blast cleaning abrasive, usually steel grit is used to remove various types of surface contaminants from a wide array of steel or foundry products. In a peening application, steel shot is used to provide compressive strength to torque or load bearing metal parts such as jet engine turbine blades, automotive springs, or heavy equipment crankshafts. Steel shot and grit is available in varying degrees of hardness, however the vast majority of metal abrasives that are used are in the 41-51 HRC hardness range. During the manufacturing process, this steel shot and grit is subjected to very intricate quality control measures , probably the most stringent in the metal abrasives industry. A relatively soft nut shell abrasive for removal of undesirable coatings without etching, scratching or marring the surface. The walnut shell particles are tough and possess high strength but are not abrasive in character. Also, walnut shells won’t generate much dust and can be used with most types of blast equipment. Another excellent biodegradable abrasive, look for this material to clean sensitive surfaces while not imparting a profile. Applications
